Frequently Asked Questions

Real answers to the questions we hear most often — about choosing the right power drill, placing an order, shipping, returns, and payment. No runaround.

About Power Drills

What is a power drill and what can I use it for? +

A power drill is an electric tool that rotates a bit to drill holes or drive screws into materials like wood, drywall, plastic, and light metal. Whether you are hanging shelves, assembling furniture, installing a ceiling fan, or taking on a home improvement project, a cordless drill is one of the most useful tools you can own.

Most people find they reach for it far more often than they expected — once it is in the house, it becomes the go-to tool for almost any fix or build.

What is the difference between a cordless drill and a corded drill? +

A cordless drill runs on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, giving you the freedom to work anywhere — in a garage, up a ladder, or in a room with no nearby outlet. A corded drill plugs into a wall socket and delivers consistent power without worrying about battery life, which is useful for very long, uninterrupted jobs.

For most homeowners and DIYers, a cordless model is the better everyday choice because of its portability and the convenience of not managing a power cord.

What is the difference between a brushless and a brushed motor? +

Brushless motors are more efficient, run cooler, last longer, and deliver more power per charge than brushed motors. They cost more upfront but tend to be worth it over time because they wear out less quickly and give you longer runtime per battery charge.

Brushed motors are fine for occasional light use if budget is the priority. If you plan to use the drill regularly or for heavier work, brushless is the smarter long-term choice.

Do I need a drill with a hammer function? +

A hammer drill adds a rapid forward-and-back percussion to the rotation, which helps when drilling into masonry — brick, concrete block, or tile. If you are mostly working on wood, drywall, or light metal, a standard drill is all you need.

If you occasionally need to drill into a concrete wall to mount a TV bracket or hang something heavy, hammer mode is a useful feature to have. For heavy or continuous masonry work, a dedicated rotary hammer is the more appropriate tool.

What safety precautions should I follow when using a power drill? +

Always wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from debris. Secure your work piece — never hold the material with one hand while drilling with the other. Start at slow speed until the bit seats properly, then increase gradually.

Keep the drill bit and chuck area clear of loose clothing or hair. When done, remove the bit before setting the drill down and engage the safety lock if your model has one. These habits become second nature quickly.

Choosing the Right Drill

What voltage drill do I need? +

Voltage determines how much power the drill can deliver. For light tasks — hanging pictures, assembling flat-pack furniture, tightening screws — a 12V drill is usually sufficient. For general home improvement like drilling into studs, installing fixtures, or weekend projects, an 18V or 20V model covers most needs without being too heavy.

Heavy-duty or frequent contractor use benefits from 20V or higher. When in doubt, a 20V drill is the most versatile option for the typical homeowner.

What is chuck size and does it matter? +

The chuck is the part of the drill that grips and holds the bit. A 3/8-inch chuck handles most common household bit sizes and keeps the tool lighter and more compact. A 1/2-inch chuck accepts larger bits and is better for heavier-duty drilling into dense materials.

For most home tasks, either size works fine. A keyless chuck lets you swap bits quickly without needing a separate tool, which most people appreciate immediately.

How do I choose the right drill for my specific project? +

Think honestly about what you will be doing most often:

· Assembling furniture, hanging shelves, small repairs: a compact 12–18V drill is more than enough.

· Room renovations, installing cabinets, regular repairs: an 18V or 20V brushless drill gives reliable power and longer battery life.

· Building a deck or working with dense hardwood or thick metal: look for higher torque and a 1/2-inch chuck.

Match the tool to your real tasks. A lighter, right-sized drill you can hold comfortably for an hour is more practical than a heavy-duty model that tires you out after 15 minutes.

How long does the battery last and how long does it take to recharge? +

Battery runtime depends on the amp-hour (Ah) rating and how hard you are working the drill. A 2.0Ah battery handles a moderate DIY session before needing a charge. A 4.0–5.0Ah battery lasts significantly longer — useful if you are working for several hours at a stretch.

Most modern lithium-ion chargers replenish a battery in 30–60 minutes; some fast chargers do it in under 30 minutes. A spare battery lets you stay productive without waiting.

What drill bits do I need and are they included? +

Most drills include at least a basic Phillips screwdriver bit and a few twist bits for holes. For general home use, a set with a range of twist bits, assorted screwdriver bits, and a spade bit for larger holes covers the majority of everyday tasks.

Check the product listing for what is included. If the drill comes bare, a standard 20-piece bit set covers most needs and is available at any hardware store.
